CONFIRMATION/RECEPTION/REAFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM VOWS
Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop (Book of Common Prayer, p. 860).
Confirmation is the adult affirmation of one’s baptism, when one makes a public declaration of one’s faith and desire to be part of the Episcopal Church. Confirmation is understood to be not the conclusion of, or the graduation from, Christian education life, but the beginning of Christian discipleship. And, in order to choose to be a disciple of Christ, one must know what it means to be a disciple.
Confirmation is the renewal of baptismal vows for those baptized at an early age who desire to make their first adult affirmation of faith. It is a sacrament of mature adulthood.
Baptism, not Confirmation, admits a person to Holy Communion.
Reception is a renewal of baptismal vows for those who have made a mature affirmation of faith in any other Christian church and who now wish to join the Episcopal Church.
Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows is a renewal of baptismal vows for those who were baptized as adults without laying on of hands by a bishop, for those who have made a mature affirmation of faith but have returned from a lapse of Christian practice, for those concluding a period of personal or pastoral crisis, and for those who are experiencing a new call from God to grow in faith or to begin a new ministry.
To be confirmed, youth should be of high school age, and are required to complete confirmation classes. Both youth and adults are asked to have a Sponsor (Parent, Godpareent, etc.) attend classes with them; Sponsors are expected to do the work alongside their Sponsorees.
